George had been a union welder all of his life. At 59 years of age, he was looking forward to the day he could retire. George recently moved to Toronto from Phoenix, AZ for another well-paying welding job. After a long week of work, he decided to blow off some steam with his girlfriend and a friend of 20 years who flew down from Phoenix to look for work.

After a night at the bar, they all returned home and George’s buddy decided to get into it with George. One thing led to another and a fight broke out in which George was stabbed.

George decided to pack a bag and leave for the night. As he was leaving the house his friend who was drunk came at him again. This time George got the knife and had to defend himself. Hours later George was in jail facing a Second Degree Murder charge.

Fast forward nine months and George is still in jail waiting for a trial with a public defender. No work had been done on his case and George couldn’t get to his retirement to pay for a private attorney or to make his excessive bail. He heard about an investigator who worked with some of the best criminal defense attorneys in Toronto and had a reputation to go the extra mile in defending his clients.

That’s where Bond Investigations and its owner Dorian Bond came in. Bond Investigations flew to George’s union hall and was able to get the paperwork for George to get access to his retirement funds. The next hurdle was getting his bail reduced to a manageable amount. It was discovered through our investigation that George’s bail was excessively high because of a criminal record in Phoenix that did not belong to him. Bond Investigations did not just make the normal phone call to the courthouse back in Phoenix to verify the charges. Mr. Bond himself flew to Phoenix, went to each courthouse, and was able to prove to the judge presiding over the bail hearing that the person’s record they were holding George on, was someone else’s who shared the same name and a close birth date. Bail was successfully reduced and George was released.

During the next few months while George was working, Bond Investigations assisted Attorney Raynak in fending off an overzealous prosecutor who would stop at nothing for a conviction. Recently, Bond Investigations was engaged by a family to investigate a sexual assault that they believed was a case of wrongful imprisonment. A woman from Gilbert, Arizona had claimed to have a fiancé in Australia – let’s call her Jane. She had accused her American family doctor – let’s call him Dr. Stevens – of a sexual assault during her medical examination prior to her trip to Australia. Following the accusation, Dr. Stevens was briefly investigated and quickly arrested based on her accusation. After enduring a month in jail, his family hired Bond Investigations in to determine what really happened, and gather crucial evidence for the trial in an effort to set him free.

Our investigation also discovered that she had gone on a date the same evening of the alleged assault with a man she had met very recently online. We were able to identify the man from this date and interview him for the case.

During our investigation, we uncovered that Jane’s many trips to Australia left a trail of broken hearts. We were able to uncover that Jane had a history of dating men for less than romantic reasons – one may say, she was motivated solely by finances. We were able to establish that she had two current boyfriends / fiancés living in Sydney Australia.

Dorian Bond’s instincts told him that the key to the case would be found in the “Land Down Under.”

Understandably, the family hesitated funding a trip to the other side of the world. It was an expense that they wished to avoid. They preferred the investigation rest in the States and be conducted over the phone and internet. I assured them, however, that the investigation would be stalled if not pursued directly. My point was unfortunately validated when an attempted call to Jane’s first Australian boyfriend proved a futile exercise. He immediately hung up the phone when the attorney and Mr. Bond contacted him via telephone.

After their first failed attempt to gather the crucial evidence needed to help free the doctor, the clients agreed to finance my “gumshoe” approach. I flew to Australia, staked out the other boyfriend’s house, and was eventually able to approach him face-to-face.

During the crucial interview, he admitted that he had uncovered during her recent stay in Australia that she had accused the doctor of sexual assault in an attempt to shake him down for enough money to finance a trip back to Australia to see him. Prior to that trip, he had declined to finance any more trips for her. This denial of finances was just prior to her accusation of the sexual assault by Dr. Stevens. He informed Mr. Bond that he became aware during her last visit with him that she had made (what he felt) bogus claims against that doctor in an effort to fund her trip back to Australia.

Furthermore, during our interview with the “fiancé” he expressed some reluctance on his part to testify for Dr. Stevens (he still held romantic feelings for Jane), but he also recognized, after we explained the full situation, the injustice in her actions and could not deny the harm she had done to an innocent man and his family.

The fiancé agreed to come to the United States and testify against her. His testimony was instrumental in obtaining a verdict of not guilty. Dr. Stevens was released the day after the verdict came down. After the trial, members of the jury told the defense team that the testimony of the Australian boyfriend was a major factor in determining their not guilty verdict.

In conclusion, while every good investigator knows the value of technology in today’s overly saturated world of smartphones, social media, Google searches, and emails, it is true that every once in awhile the old-fashioned sleuthing gets the job done more effectively.

In this case, it was made quickly evident that no amount of technological research or communication was going to uncover the necessary evidence to set an innocent man free and ensure that justice was delivered.

A concerned wife solicited the services of the trained professionals at Bond Investigations. She told us that she was beginning to suspect her husband was cheating on her. She expressed her concern to him, and asked him if this was true.

The husband vehemently denied he was having an affair, but his peculiar behavior continued. The wife was still suspicious and as a result, began to intercept her husband’s emails and text messages. She found he was corresponding with a woman.

One evening, the husband told his wife that he had business to conduct in another state, and would be traveling for a week. The state where he was traveling was where the wife believed the girlfriend resided.

The wife wanted and needed visual proof that her husband was, in fact, having an affair. During the free consultation with the Case Analyst at Bond Investigations, the client (with the expert help of the case analyst) determined the best action plan for the situation. Surveillance would be the best way to validate her fears. She could not rely on her husband to be honest about the affair because he had already fervently denied it.

The wife, with the guidance of case management, provided our firm with her husband’s flight information, including airline, airport, and date and time of travel. The goal was to have investigators from Bond Investigations positioned at the airport where the husband was to land, and to document if he was meeting his lover.

In order for the private investigator to reliably identify the subjects, he had received digital photographs of the two of them. After the husband’s flight arrived, one private investigator from Bond Investigations positioned himself near the arrival gate and one in a vehicle outside in the arrivals lane. Both positions allowed a perfect view of the deplaning passengers from that flight and ensured that if the husband met his lover at the curb, we could quickly start mobile surveillance. The man was greeted by his lover, and they embraced and kissed after he exited the arrival gate. They continued to walk to the baggage claim area hand in hand. The investigators assigned to this case we’re able to provide video documentation of the public displays of affection, not only at the airport but many times during the weekend.

Conclusion:

Although the worst fears of the wife had been validated by confirming that her husband had indeed been unfaithful to her, she was very grateful for the precise action that was taken by Bond Investigations. With her desire to know the truth, and the commitment of the investigator, she was able to make a decision that was best for her and their children.
